Occupational Therapy
for Children and Adults

Occupational therapy that builds skills, confidence and independence for everyday life, at home, at school, at work and in the community.

About occupational therapy

Occupational Therapy Built Around Everyday Life

Occupational therapy helps children, teenagers and adults build the skills and confidence to do what matters to them, from getting dressed and cooking a meal to keeping up at school or work.

Your occupational therapist looks at what you want to do, what is getting in the way, and what would make it easier. That might mean practising a skill, changing how a task is done, or adding equipment or home changes.

We work in real settings because that is where progress sticks: at home, at school or work, in the community or online, with the people who support you.

How Occupational Therapy Can Help

Support is built around your goals. Common areas include:

  • Everyday routines. Dressing, showering, meals and household tasks, so you rely less on others.
  • Confidence and decision making. Building independence step by step, at your own pace.
  • Sensory and emotional regulation. Understanding sensory preferences and calming strategies that work at home and school.
  • Fine motor and play skills. Handwriting, cutting, buttons, zips and play for children.
  • Equipment and assistive technology. Trialling aids and devices that increase independence.
  • Home safety and modifications. Falls-risk reviews, ramps, rails and bathroom changes, with the evidence needed for funding.
  • Social skills and community life. Relationships, hobbies and activities that support wellbeing.
  • School, study and work. Transitions to school, university, volunteering or employment.
  • Thinking and organisation. Planning, memory aids, routines and visual schedules.
  • Assessments and reports. Functional and home assessments, with clear reports for funders, schools or employers.

Common Questions About Occupational Therapy

What does an occupational therapist help with?

Occupational therapists help people take part in everyday life. Support can include daily routines, self-care, sensory regulation, school or work participation, equipment, home modifications and community access. Occupational therapists in Australia are registered health practitioners, and you can learn more about the profession at Occupational Therapy Australia.

Do I need a referral for occupational therapy?

It depends on how your sessions are funded. Many private sessions need no referral, while Medicare-rebated sessions need a GP plan. The quickest way to start is to send a referral or call us, and we will explain what applies to you.

What happens at the first appointment?

The first visit is about getting to know you: your strengths, goals, routines and what is getting in the way. We may recommend focused assessments, then agree a personalised plan with you.

Can occupational therapy help my child?

Yes. Children often work on play, fine motor skills, sensory preferences, dressing, eating and routines, with parents and teachers learning the same strategies so progress carries into everyday life.

How is occupational therapy funded?

Options can include paying privately, private health extras, Medicare for eligible chronic conditions with a GP plan, and other funding programs. Contact us and we will talk through what may suit you.

Where do sessions take place?

Sessions can take place at home, at school or work, in the community, at the clinic or by telehealth, depending on your goals. See all our allied health services or get in touch to check what is available for you.
